MOAS' Low-Cost Heartworm Treatment Program

Providing affordable heartworm treatment to save lives

Heartworm disease is “a serious disease that results in severe lung disease, heart failure, other organ damage, and death in pets,” as described by the FDA. As the American Heartworm Society explains, “Heartworm disease causes lasting damage to the heart, lungs and arteries, and can affect the dog’s health and quality of life long after the parasites are gone. For this reason, heartworm prevention for dogs is by far the best option, and treatment—when needed—should be administered as early in the course of the disease as possible.”

Ideally, pets will be protected from heartworms by heartworm preventatives to avoid potentially long-lasting effects. Preventatives are usually given via a monthly pill and can cost as little as $10 per month. Monthly preventatives are available through MOAS once your dog has had a negative heartworm test at our vaccine clinic.

But if your dog has already tested positive for heartworms, it is important to move forward with heartworm treatment as soon as possible to avoid further damage. Treatment costs can often range from $800 - $1000 because the medications involved are quite expensive and the treatment process is fairly involved. Unfortunately, this often means that families can’t afford heartworm treatment for their dogs, especially when more than one pup has heartworms.

In order to make heartworm treatment more affordable, MOAS is thrilled to begin offering low-cost heartworm treatment at a significantly reduced price.

Heartworm treatment involves 30 days of pretreatment with an antibiotic (Doxycycline) followed by a series of three injections. Your dog must be on monthly heartworm preventative during treatment and will need to be on strict crate rest, meaning absolutely no exercise, no running, and leash walks to go to the bathroom only. Dogs undergoing treatment must be kept quiet to minimize the risk of complications. Our staff will be happy to explain the process to you in more detail, and you can learn more about heartworm treatment through the American Heartworm Society as well.

Treatment is available to anyone regardless of county of residence. If your dog has already tested positive at a different facility, your dog will still need to be tested by our veterinarians.
